Russia May Back
Iran’s SCO Membership
Russia will probably support Iran’s membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a Russian newspaper wrote.
IRNA quoted Nezavisimaya Gazeta (Independent Gazetta) as reporting on Monday that Moscow is likely to back Tehran’s membership in SCO’s upcoming meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in August.

Although induction of new members is not on the agenda of the meeting, heads of member-states will discuss the issue informally, the daily stated.
The newspaper reported that member-states will risk a stand-off with the United States if Iran joins the international body. The report added that China and Kyrgyzstan are reluctant to vex Washington by accepting Iran to their club. However, Russia is willing to have Iran as a member of the group.

Remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on July 9 at the meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of SCO in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan are proof that Moscow would support Iran’s membership. In the meeting, the Russian foreign policy chief called to step up efforts to admit Iran as a member state.

Moscow lobbied for Iran’s membership in the SCO last year but Beijing opposed the move assuming it would sour relations with the West. The Kremlin seems to have decided to revive the idea as its relations with Washington is getting increasingly strained.

The leaders of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and guests will gather in Kyrgyzstan at the annual summit of the 6-year-old Shanghai Cooperation Organization to discuss economic and security cooperation for Central Asia. Observers Mongolia, Iran and Turkmenistan will be represented by their presidents, and Pakistan and India by foreign ministers.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to visit the summit and may also join other leaders at a military range in Russia to observe command post exercises.

Russia wants to regain its 'superpower' stauts and thinks by undercutting America is the way to go, it really is not a bad plan from their point of view.

Russia has never been a friend to the United States, and never will be.

I wonder what would have happened if Hitler never invaded the USSR and never broke their aggression treaty if they would have just sat back and just watched.

Russia has never been a friend to the United States, and never will be.

It is really subjective. One can argue they were a friend from 1940-45. IN the end, nations are not friends. They merely have intersections of commonality at given times.
